Questionnaire Analysis
The Tarantino Tigers group had conducted a short questionnaire consisting of 15 questions to find our target audience as well as gain a general understanding of what the public would consider to be understanding of what the public would consider to be interesting and entertaining thus adding these ideas into our two minute opening sequence for an ultimate enjoyment.
The data which was collected is a helpful source in which we will need when selecting a genre for our opening sequence and from the results we selected on an appropriate genre (slasher) and conducted another questionnaire to understand their concepts and beliefs on the chosen genre convention.
Initially to commence the process, we printed out 30 copies of the questionnaire and gave these to 15 males and 15 females to complete. We decided to use a handful of participants for much more reliable results.
We’ve given them out to an equal number of participants to gain a fair result so that it won’t have an effect on the responses as both genders have the same/equal rights. We also decided to give out the questionnaire to equal numbers of both genders to avoid sexual discrimination.
We asked a fair range of different age groups. We decided as a group to have the lowest age range of 15 as it would have been much more appropriate for our 2 minute opening sequence.
Favourite genre: We asked this question to gain knowledge on the preference of our target audience so we could include it for our 2 minute opening sequence. A high proportion prefers the horror genre which was closely followed by the thriller convention. As a group we decided to go for the horror convention but we then realised that a horror consists of supernatural elements i.e. ghosts. This is will definitely be a barrier since we have £0.00 budget. For this reason we decided to do a slasher convention as it contributes both the horror and thriller conventions and it would be possible to produce a 2 minute opening.
A very high population watch movies and films in the cinema and online which is not surprising as in the modern age there are less people going into shops to buy DVDs and watch movies on TVs as we are in the internet age. We believe that the cinema scored highly as it individuals would like to feel ‘the big screen’ experience.

Where do you prefer watching films?: We believe that the cinema scored highly as it individuals would like to feel ‘the big screen’ experience which would not be possible to live at home in their living room.
Accordingly to our results, a grabbing and interesting opening scene is a must to attract the audiences attention. A slasher genre has many intros to their story, some may establish the scenery and some may just have music playing in the background as title sequences appear on the screen and some slasher opening scenes go straight into the action. So therefore as a group, we have decided to go straight into the action of the narrative to keep the audience hooked.
What attracts you to a film?:We asked this question to understand what classes a good film to be good. A very high proportion stated that trailers are an important variable in making a good film worth watching. Actors and actresses also achieved high ratings as this may be because of their way of delivering is interesting and also their looks may be pleasing to the eye. All of these factors hook the audience into watching the film.
The opening scene is said to extremely important in introducing the narrative. We decided that our genre convention for our two minute opening sequence is a slasher so therefore as a group, we have decided to go straight into the action of the narrative to keep the audience hooked as some slasher films do.
A very high amount prefer the opening scene to go straight into action. The reason for this being is to keep the audience hooked form the beginning. As we a group we also discussed what we thought was a preferable opening scene and we concluded that films and movies that jump straight into action hooks the reader instantly thus making it an interesting movie. We also found that narrative also scored fairly high on the graph above so we decided that for our two minute opening sequence we would include both these aspects to enhance the chances of an enjoyable opening clip.
List you’re top three favourite films of all time: We asked this question to understand and gain more knowledge on why these where their all time favourite movies. We looked at the openings of all these films and found out that a fair amount of these movies jumped straight into action.
Once again this pie chart shows that slasher movies are not a favourite with the audience. A very high portion watch a slasher movie/film at least once a month or none at all. By producing a two minute opening sequence of a slasher it might encourage people to watch more of this genre more often.
Many of our participants are quite informed with the latest movies that are released and therefore we have to make sure that our work is as good as the latest movies that are released in cinemas, by this we must have a good narrative which is as original as possible in order to hook the audience’s attention.
After these results were collected, we decided on a horror genre since it had received the highest votes but a horror convention consists of supernatural activities so we decided to amend our idea slightly and conduct a slasher opening sequence instead. We produced a very short questionnaire on slasher to gain knowledge on the concepts and beliefs that slasher audience would consider and what makes slasher movie/films a great entertainment.

Gehan's Evaluation
In what way does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
Our media product is a two minute slasher opening sequence to a film. A slasher usually consists of a psychopathic killer stalking and killing a sequence of victims. We used this idea by using one of our group members to imitate the act of a killer and his camera as a stalking weapon/tool. Those pictures help charecterise the killer as a true psycopath who is hungry for revenge. Majority of the stalking happens in the night where low key lighting is used, and we used this idea as it does increase mystery and tension. Female victims are a tradition in slasher movies and we have used this convention through photos and the poster with the killer carrying one of his female victims. However this idea was challenged as its usually blonde girls with big breasts that are usually attacked but we decided to use a brunette instead. Another use is the quotes that are usually written on the poster of horror-slasher movies and we wanted to incorporate this into our version. This phrase is a taster of what the movie or in our case the two minute opening is about.
How does your media product represent particular social groups?
There is alot of sexual discrimination within our sequence. The male charaters which usually play the role of the killer in most slasher conventions are portrayed as the character with more power and control(this is seen espically through camera angles such as low angle shots which shows superiorty of the male character as if we're looking up to them.) In comparison to the female characters which tend to be victims and are seen as defenceless and naive (this is shown through camera angles such as high angle shots as if we're looking down on them).
What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
A famous media institution that could distribute our media product is Universal Pictures Video as it specialises in horror conventions therefore attracting a niche audience of 18+. This compliments our media product as there are several graphic scenes which could only be suitable for 18+ audiences. A low budgeted film that was distributed via Universal Pictures Video is 'The Texas Chainsaw Massacre' produced in 1974, which is a well known slasher movie that achieved great success.
Who would be the audience for your media product?
The constant use of killing, blood, death and harm to others will be extremely unsuitable for any persons under the age requirement of 18 as the BBFC would not recommend this to be displayed for a long period of time as it encourages the youngsters to imitate the act, leading to an unhealthy society and corrupted teenagers.
What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?
We constructed two different posters attracting different audiences to watch our sequence. One poster shows some clear slasher conventions like the blood whereas the other is more ambiguous. One has the outline figure of the killer alone in the moonlight in a graveyard in the dark, whereas the other has both the killer and the victim which breaks the generic conventions of slasher movies, as it reveals one of his victims which is not a tradition of slasher film posters. However, throughout the whole two minute sequence the weapon is not shown that is used to kill the victim. A weapon is a must as it's used in a majority of horror-slasher movies. We've broken the generic conventions therefore attracting the audience as it is more original and gives an air of ambiguity and enigma, as the audience don't know the killers murdering technique. The music used in the background (Russian Roulette) is quite well known song therefore increases the chances of attractiing the audience into watching our media sequence.
What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?
This product has enlightened me in many ways such as how to operate a camera using different angles and understand the different shots and the effect they have on each scene. I also learnt what shot or angle is most appropriate on certain parts of the sequence. ie. a shot reverse shot is commonly used in conversations etc. I also learnt how to edit clips from our media sequence and add non-diagetic sounds i.e. 'Russian Roulette' music, thunderstorm etc. over the clips. The programme imovie was new to me so navigating was difficult at first but after several attempts I understood the process. All of these skills have been developed from our preliminary task through a feedback that was given in which lighting, editing and not having enough angle shots was a slight downfall to our task. Technology and other equipment is extremely helpful but very difficult to operate with sometimes, nevertheless it's up to me to make the sequence look plausible and get the desired effect.
Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you tell you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?
The preliminary task was a useful starter for me to get use to operating the camera and develop my understanding of the different angles and shots. It also was a starter in editing which was extremely difficult as the programme was very unfamiliar to me which i learnt to use appropriately through trial and error and, finally i've finally gained reasonable amount of knowledge. The editing for the two minute opening sequence. I've learnt to add voice over's i.e. narrative-killer speaking and music and thunderstorm. After completing the preliminary task i condcuted a mini-survey and asked a question on what the group had needed to improve. I took this into account and made everything much better in the sequence. I grew confident using the camera and editing sequnces too for the second time round. We used different camera shots i.e. point of view shot from the victim's perspective and this was a very tricky task but it was also very effective. We also used extreme-close up shots shot of the moon as it symbolises the killer's morals. We also used angles such as tilt up to the killer's face and tilt down from the moon. Light had been a problem in the preliminary task (according to the feedback) so i made sure that the lighning was even and less distarcting because it does have an affect on the outcome of the movie.

Marwa's Evaluation
In what way does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
In our media product we used and developed certain conventions, for example the sound in the 2 minute opening scene causes an enigma and tension. Also we used the idea of having a female victim, which is used in a majority of slasher films like Halloween, silent night deadly night and prom night.
How does your media product represent particular social groups?
As a slasher theme there is a lot of gender discrimination. Women are seen as weak and vulnerable towards men, who are the main characters and are seen as more strong and overpowering. This causes a lot of controversies in social groups when discussing feminism.
What kind of media institutions might distribute your media product and why?
I think the best institution distributor choice for our media product should be Universal Pictures Video because it’s a well known institute; it deals with a majority of 15 and 18+ films and is also known for its specialties in the horror genre. Some of their products include Scream (1996) and Psycho (1960).
Who would be the audience for your media product?
The audience we would prefer for our media product would have to be 18 and older due to the amount of exposure of blood and violence throughout the whole film. The scenes of graphic violence in a slasher film is what seperates it from a 15 and 18 certificate.
How did you attract/address your audience?
We attracted the audience by making two different posters and posting them on our blog. Both posters include the main character, the similarities are that they both have a dark back drop which represents the main characters emotions and mind state. The difference between the posters is that the victim is included in the second poster which we chose and decided represent the opening sequence better.
What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?
During the process I have learnt the different technologies which consist of editing and filming, but as a member of the group my job was mainly to take pictures of our progression and also take pictures for our opening sequence.
Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you tell you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?
I have learnt the different filming shots and angles. Also to manipulate light to your advantage. Which we did in our opening sequence. We have used different shot angles such as point of view shots and other more complex shots.

Viran's Evaluation
In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
The media film sequence we have created has kept many slasher film conventions such as; concealing the killers identity, which can be compared to with other notable sdlashers such as Friday the 13th ,Halloween and scream. We have challenged the conventions of the genre by giving the killer a voice, which is usually silent throughout the whole film.
How does your media product represent particular social groups?
The media product represents a disturbed and violent social group as the product contains many violent looking scenes alongside the tension and suspense in the music of the heart beat. The male population is represented as superior to the female population as we have used several high angle shots to show the man is in control.
What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
Since we have developed a low budget movie opening it is likely that a smaller institution would distribute our media product. This is because firstly; the slasher genre is a sub genre of horror, which is generally followed by die hard slasher fans so not as many people would want to go and see it as it is not the most popular genre.
Who would be the audience for your media product?
the audience we have made this product for would be people aged from 18 years and upwards as it contains very violent notions of death, gore and blood that my affect a viewer of a younger age. Die hard slasher fans would want to go and see the film as they follow a cult.
How did you attract/address your audience?
we attract the audience my the catch and gripping film opening and the moment of the killer not being know by face only by his masked identity. The senses of mystery makes the audience want to find out who the killer is .we have left many questions unanswered as the audience don’t know how the kills his victims and why.
What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?
Through this process of filming and editing I have learnt that the technologies we have been provided with are not very reliable at keeping the work saved and importing as these problems caused us to waste time when trying to save and import our movie files to the Mac computers.
Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?
Looking back on our preliminary I have learnt how to control the lighting of the filming and how to keep all shots the same by using continuity and how we could improve the sound quality in the new clips. The preliminary task has taught us a lot about camera shots and angles.

Enes's Evaluation
In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
Our two minute opening sequence to a film has challenged several forms and conventions of a slasher film. Within our production, we designed a poster that would challenge the main principles of a slasher film poster. Of all the slasher posters we had seen, I noticed that the weapon was used in the poster. We challenged this by not including a weapon to create a sense of ambiguity and mystery, as it does not tell the audience the technique the killer will use in his murders. Die hard slasher fans would instantly pick up on this and either appreciate the idea or criticise it. One other way we challenged the forms and conventions was by giving the villain a voice. This is a big risk as many notable slashers include muted villains, whereas our villain has a say and he shows the narrative from his own perspective, so our sequence is a unique cinematic experience.
How does your media product represent particular social groups?
Our media product portrays males as the superior sex as it is the male who carries the female through the forest and steers her whilst she is in a wheel barrow. We used several tilts within our sequence to demonstrate the male’s higher status. With reference to the schizophrenic, psychopathic and agoraphobic, our media product shows the mentally disabled in a bad light, as the killer comes from a mentally disabled background.
What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
I think that a media institution of a lower level might distribute our media product as we have created a low budget film that is to the taste of only a particular audience. A similar case to ours was the film titled “The Blair Which Project”. This is because it was a low budget horror and its film was released by Artisan.
Who would be the audience for your media product?
The audience for our product will have to be strictly persons aged 18 and over due to the sheer graphic violence within our film sequence. This film will not be suitable to anyone under the age of 18, as the film raises many issues of violence and death.
How did you attract/address your audience?
Our two minute opening sequence to a film uses the concept of one of the main narrative theorists, Roland Barthes. We used his “Enigma code” which acts as a hook or mystery to be resolved by an audience. It can be compared to a typical cliff hanger, like the ones you see in serials where the audience have to watch next weeks episode to see what happens.
What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?
Throughout the course of constructing this product I have learnt abut the different processes that go into film making and distribution. I have also experienced the sophistication and detail required when recording with the cameras and the affect lighting can have on your work. We also went through the frustrations of using the new imovie witch certainly had its faults when it came to importing and exporting movie files. Overall, I have learnt that technologies used in the process of making the film, although advanced and effective, they can also be very unreliable.
Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?
From the preliminary task, we gained confidence in our ability to use riskier shots; Such as the point of view shot of the victim facing the killer. We have also learnt about the effect lighting can have on our film, and the impact diagetic sound has too. We were a lot more confident with editing after the preliminary task as we felt alt surer in what we were doing because it gave us the necessary training to film our final two minute opening sequence.

The Voice over
"My whole life was a lie... Raised to believe I was unique, special even. I accepted it for a while, but life has it's own cruel way of showing you the truth... The only thing special about me, was my diagnosis... 3rd degree schizophrenia , chronic psychopathy, and severe agoraphobia began to develop when I was just eleven. They pumped me so full I could hardly walk. Suppressed thoughts crept into my head, eating me away taking control. I grew a passion for hate. Like a demon in the pit of my stomach, trying to break free. After the constant nightmare of screams and laughter tormenting me. The girl's ear splitting shriek was as loud as ever. It sends a tingling chill down my spine, and as it reverberates in my head, I lose a part of myself. Having slow, painful revenge is only a quick fix to others. To you, its everything and everything happens for a reason."
The voiceover will be read out slowly to create a sense of tension and suspense. In the background there are diagetic sounds which include foot steps, door creaks and other sounds. We have included thunder and heavy rain at the beginning as this kind of ambience is generally associated with Horror and mystery. The instrumental in the background is Rihanna's "Russian Roulette". We chose this as our soundtrack as the beginning is eerie and the middle has a heartbeat sound which is constant throughout. We edited it so that the drum roll of the beat dropping comes simultaneously with the footage.
